FAMILY AND CONSUMER COUNCILS

When you enter the world of disabilities, you may find that you do not know where to get needed information, help, support and services.  Sometimes you feel that no one else has felt the way you feel.  By connecting with other people with disabilities or other parents through local Consumer Councils and Family Councils, you will find that many people have felt these feelings and have learned where to get information to help them.  Local Consumer and Family Councils are individuals and family members who have been through or are going through situations that are similar to your own.  For education and information, for an anchor, or for support, contact your local Consumer or Family Council.  They are listed in the back of this book with the resources.

Family Councils

Family Councils are groups of parents working to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities and their families.  They are set up on state, region and local levels and are organized and run by family members of individuals with disabilities.  Family councils provide a way for parents to support and educate other parents.  The Division endorses family councils.  One of the purposes of family councils is to give input to the Division about the policies and services it provides. Your family council also has a link at the Division website – www.hsdspd.utah.gov.
